Technically Tavares, but Mount Dora claimed it. Lake Saunders Park is off 561, 7 minutes from downtown. The draw is a 200-foot boardwalk that goes straight into a cypress swamp.
The water is black, the cypress knees are tall, and the air is 10 degrees cooler. In the morning you’ll see otters. They slide down the bank like they own it. Afternoons are for herons and snakes. If you’re lucky, a barred owl will ask “who cooks for you” from the canopy.
The boardwalk ends at a platform with a bench. That’s it. No gift shop, no railings high enough to feel safe. You’re in the swamp, not looking at it. Kids love it because it feels dangerous. Adults love it because it’s quiet.
Mount Dora people use it when they have out-of-town guests who say “show me real Florida.” It delivers. No gimmicks, just ecosystem. The city of Tavares maintains it, but the cars in the lot have Mount Dora stickers.
Local Tip: Go 30 minutes before sunset. The bugs aren’t bad yet and the light through the cypress is unreal. Don’t wear sandals. Don’t touch the water. Do bring binoculars.
