12 minutes south in Tavares, Key Lime Bistro sits on the Lake Dora canal behind the Prop Shop. It’s technically Tavares, but Mount Dora boaters claim it because you get there by water.
The vibe is old Florida fish camp. Tin roof, license plates on the walls, tables on a deck over the canal. If you pull up in a pontoon, they have slips. If you drive, parking is tight and part of the charm.
Food is simple and good. Grouper sandwich the size of your head, blackened or fried. Gator bites that actually taste like chicken. Key lime pie with a crust that doesn’t get soggy. The “Lakerita” margarita is blue and strong and comes in a plastic cup. You’ll want two.
Live music is Thursday to Sunday, usually a guy with a guitar and a Jimmy Buffett setlist. The crowd sings. The boats at the dock rock. Sunset turns the canal gold and the whole place goes quiet for 3 minutes. Then the music starts again.
Tavares calls itself “America’s Seaplane City.” You’ll see them land and take off while you eat. It’s the only restaurant where your dinner show might be a Cessna on floats.
Local Tip: Boat over from Mount Dora’s Grantham Pointe ramp. 20-minute ride, no traffic. Tie up, eat, and be back for Mount Dora’s 5pm cannon. That’s a perfect Lake County day.
