The Magical Meat Boutique opened on 5th Ave in 2019 with a name that dares you not to walk in. Inside it’s butcher counter meets craft beer bar. Owners Erik and Karen Brown left corporate jobs to sling charcuterie and they brought a sense of humor with them.
The case runs 20+ cheeses, cured meats from Florida and Spain, house-made pickles, and spreads that change weekly. You build a board by pointing. They’ll slice prosciutto paper-thin and tell you which IPA cuts through the funk of a blue cheese. No board is the same twice. That’s the point.
But the real reason locals show up Tuesday nights: trivia. It started as 4 teams. Now it’s 25 teams, standing room only, and people bring ringers from Orlando. Categories are brutal: 1990s one-hit wonders, Mount Dora history, “name that cheese by texture.” The prize is a $50 gift card and bragging rights that last until next week. The losers take it personally.
The sleeper hit is the “Dora Dog.” All-beef dog, split and griddled, topped with pimento cheese, bacon jam, and crispy onions on a buttered roll. It’s not on the main menu. You have to know to ask. It started as a staff meal and regulars forced it into rotation.
Beer is 12 taps, mostly Florida breweries. Wolf Branch, Big Storm, Central 28. Wine is by the glass, chosen to pair with fat and salt. There’s no kitchen — just the case, a slicer, and a toaster oven for warming brie. That’s all it needs.
Local Tip: Go at 3pm on a weekday. The board artists are bored and will build you something ridiculous. Sit at the bar, ask for “dealer’s choice,” and tell them your budget. You’ll leave with dinner and a story.
