25 minutes north in Umatilla, The Hideaway is a bar and grill on Lake Pearl. Dirt road, gravel lot, and a building that looks like it might have been a house, a barn, or both.
Inside it’s wood, neon, and locals. The bar is 40 feet long and usually has 3 people who’ve been there since lunch. The menu is handwritten. Burgers are half-pound, cooked on a flat top that’s older than you. The “Hideaway Burger” has fried egg, bacon, and pimento cheese. Get it.
The deck hangs over Lake Pearl. Sunset is the show. Pontoon boats idle by. Someone’s always playing country on the jukebox. On Sundays there’s a jam session. Guitar players show up with cases, drink beer, and take turns. No cover, no attitude.
Umatilla is farm country. The Hideaway is where farmers, pilots from the nearby airport, and Mount Dora people who want quiet all meet. It’s not fancy. It’s Florida. The bathrooms have hand-painted signs and the AC works. That’s enough.
Local Tip: Take 450 West from 19. It’s a canopy road with almost no traffic. Roll the windows down. You’ll smell orange blossoms in season. Cash only, and the ATM is 10 miles away. Be ready.
