8 minutes north of Mount Dora, 2301 E 5th Ave in Eustis, Trout Lake Nature Center is 230 acres of what Lake County looked like before orange groves. Pine flatwoods, cypress swamp, and a 20-acre lake with no boats allowed.
The center started in 1987 when the city bought the land to protect it. Now it has 5 miles of trails, a museum with snakes and turtles, and a 40-foot observation tower. Climb it and you see Lake Eustis to the north, Lake Dora to the south. On a clear day you can spot the Mount Dora water tower.
Trails are sugar sand and boardwalk. The “Swamp Walk” goes through cypress knees and ends at a dock where alligators sun themselves. Don’t touch the water. The “Pine Island Trail” is higher, drier, and full of scrub jays. They’re blue, loud, and protected. If one lands on your head, you’re lucky.
It’s free, open daily sunrise to sunset. The museum is $2 donation. Staff are mostly retired teachers who know every plant. Ask about the carnivorous pitcher plants near the bog. They’ll walk you right to them.
Local Tip: Go after a rain. The sand firms up and the smells come out: pine, palmetto, wet earth. Mount Dora people go when the Arts Festival crowd gets to be too much. Trout Lake resets you.
