15 minutes west in Yalaha, a German family turned a roadside fruit stand into a full-blown beer garden. Yalaha Bakery is open Thursday to Sunday and it’s worth planning your week around.
Hans and Heike Winkler started with bread in 1996. Now it’s 40 kinds: pumpernickel, sunflower, pretzel rolls, apple strudel. The line starts at 9am. By 11am the pretzels are gone. They still hand-twist every one and salt them with German salt.
The beer garden opened later. Picnic tables under oaks, Lake Harris 50 yards away, live polka or blues depending on the weekend. Bratwurst, schnitzel, and goulash come from the kitchen. German beer is on tap. Florida beer too. Nobody cares if you mix them.
You can watch the bakers through glass while you wait. Flour in the air, trays coming out hot. The whole place smells like yeast and barley. Mount Dora snowbirds move here in November and Yalaha Bakery is their first stop. It’s the closest you get to Europe without a passport.
Local Tip: Get the “German breakfast” if you go early: two eggs, bratwurst, warm pretzel, and a beer if you’re bold. Sit on the dock. Turtles will judge you. Buy a loaf of the sunflower bread for later — it makes insane toast.
